Professional affiliations

The Association of British Science Writers (ABSW) exists to help those who write about science and technology, and to improve the standard of science journalism in the UK. The association's members include print and broadcast journalists, authors, scriptwriters and producers, and others active in the field of communicating science and technology. Through briefings with prominent scientists and policymakers, facility visits, debates and social events, the ABSW helps to create links between science writers and their subjects and markets.

I have been a member of the ABSW for nine years, and have recently been appointed to the Executive Committee.

European Association of Science Editors (EASE)

The European Association of Science Editors is a non-governmental and non-profit-making international organization operated for scientific and educational purposes. Its aims are to promote improved communication in science by providing efficient means for cooperation among editors in all disciplines of science, and to assist in the efficient operation of publications in the sciences.

The Institute of Clinical Research is the premier professional organisation in Europe for scientists, technicians and other people involved in the design, conduct and management of clinical trials on human subjects. It is committed to sharing information and encouraging "best practice".

• Edited, produced, and sold advertising for Clinical Research focus, the Institute's market-leading journal, generating year-on-year increases in revenue and profit
  • Written many informative and thought-provoking articles and 'opinion' editorials
• Delivered year-on-year increases in turnover and profitability of journal, while enhancing reader satisfaction
• Served as representative of the Institute on PICTF Working Group 5 (Clinical Research) Communications Group and Clinical Researcher of the Year 2002 Steering Committee
• Replaced loss-making printed directory product with profitable online version
• Re-engineered information infrastructure to increase productivity by "joining up" operations
• Organisation-wide software (Win 95/98/ME/2K) and network (Win 2K Server) system administration and support

Link-Connect offered a combination of proprietary software, design services and marketing consultancy to help traditional businesses incorporate the internet profitably, either directly or in combination with organizations with large existing customer bases (e.g. banks, telcos etc).

• Conceived, developed and marketed end-user services to increase revenue and customer loyalty
• Conceived and developed new products and "wraparound" applications instrumental in winning significant channel agreements

www.selectscience.net defined a standard as a "consumer-professional" webzine and information resource for the applied chemistry and life science communities. My position involved me in almost every aspect of the business from its inception until 9 months after its successful launch.

• Specified and co-developed complex database-driven website
• Developed and implemented marketing strategies to increase reader stream at no cost
• Developed database applications to enhance efficiency of several content-maintenance and marketing processes
• Developed tracking solution to advise on advertising strategies
• Managed strategic and tactical development of webzine editorial content
• Analyzed competitive products/services in "old" and "new" media
• Trained and supervised editorial, administrative and data entry staff

ISC publishes a number of free, qualified-circulation journals and trade magazines concerning analytical chemistry instrumentation, biotechnology and clinical diagnostics for the European and domestic markets. A privately-held American company, ISC leads many of the markets in which it competes, in terms of circulation, pagination and industry profile.

• Managed Editorial department (2 Assistant Editors plus freelance contributors) publishing over 30 issues per year (five titles). The department sourced, edited and proofread all technical and marketing material for these high-quality publications
• Enabled publication of additional titles through efficiency gains
• Reduced production cost of major corporate database product
• Implemented an email forum in 1995, for discussion of chromatography. This forum was widely respected throughout the chromatographic community, with over 500 subscribers
